Calibrating pH and EC probes

pH and EC probes drift. Calibration is what turns a $10 probe into a trustworthy instrument — and Verdalio's ML layer only extends good calibration, it does not replace it.

What you need

  • pH 4.01 and 7.01 buffer solutions
  • EC 1.413 mS/cm standard solution
  • Distilled water for rinsing between solutions

Calibrate pH (two-point)

  1. Rinse the probe in distilled water.
  2. Place it in pH 7.01 buffer; let the reading settle; confirm the 7.01 point.
  3. Rinse; place in pH 4.01 buffer; confirm the 4.01 point.
  4. Rinse and return to your solution.

Calibrate EC

Rinse, place the probe in the 1.413 mS/cm standard, let it settle, confirm. Always measure EC in mS/cm, not PPM — PPM conversion varies by manufacturer and will silently mislead you.

Operator discipline

  • Calibrate pH probes every 14–28 days, EC probes every 2–4 weeks.
  • Store pH probes in KCl storage solution between uses — never dry, never in distilled water.
  • Clean probes monthly; see Cleaning & Sanitation.

Then let the ML layer help

Once a probe is calibrated, the hub's on-device model tracks its ongoing drift and corrects readings between manual calibrations. Cheap sensors, smart software.
